Overview

The Steep Challenge of Mount Kilimanjaro

The Umbwe Route stands out as the most challenging and least used trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its steepness and direct approach, it is recommended for experienced climbers who are confident in their ability to tackle rapid altitude gains and demanding terrains. This route offers a secluded and intense climbing experience.

Day to day

Itinerary

Altitude: From 1,600m to 2,850m.
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours.

Start from Umbwe Gate and ascend sharply through dense rainforest to reach Umbwe Cave Camp. The trail is steep and physically demanding, requiring a strong start.

Altitude: From 2,850m to 3,950m.
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours.

Continue ascending steeply through the forest before reaching the moorland zone. The route then joins with the Machame Route at Barranco Camp. Expect a challenging but rewarding day of trekking.

Altitude: From 3,950m to 3,995m.
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours.

Tackle the famous Barranco Wall and then descend slightly to Karanga Camp. This part of the route offers both challenging climbs and scenic rewards.

Altitude: From 3,995m to 4,673m.
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours.

Head to Barafu Camp, passing through alpine desert terrain. The hike is shorter but steep, providing time to rest and prepare for the summit attempt.

Altitude: From 4,673m to 5,895m (summit), descend to 3,100m.
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours ascent, 5-7 hours descent.

Begin the challenging ascent to the summit around midnight. The path to Uhuru Peak is arduous but immensely gratifying. After reaching the summit, descend to Mweka Camp.

Altitude: From 3,100m to 1,640m.
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours.

Complete your descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. This final stretch allows time to reflect on the arduous yet rewarding journey.

Location: Barranco Camp or Karanga Camp.
Activities: Acclimatization walks and rest.

An optional extra day for acclimatization, increasing the chance of a successful summit. This can be a day of light activities and rest.
