Similar to the Lemosho Route in terms of scenery and trail, the Shira Route distinguishes itself by starting at a higher elevation. Itinerary

Altitude: Start at 3,610m, camp at 3,500m.
Hiking Time: 1-2 hours.

Begin at Shira Gate, with a short trek on a relatively flat trail to Shira 1 Camp. The high start provides immediate immersion into the mountain’s upper regions.

Altitude: From 3,500m to 3,840m.
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours.

Trek across the Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp. Enjoy panoramic views and acclimatize to the altitude. This day is crucial for adjusting to the higher elevation.

Altitude: From 3,840m to 4,630m (Lava Tower), then down to 3,950m.
Hiking Time: 6-7 hours.

Ascend to Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend to Barranco Camp. The climb high, sleep low strategy aids in acclimatization and prepares you for higher altitudes.

Altitude: From 3,950m to 3,995m.
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours.

Tackle the Barranco Wall in a thrilling climb and proceed to Karanga Camp. This stage is both physically and mentally stimulating, with rewarding views.

Altitude: From 3,995m to 4,673m.
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours.

Ascend to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit attempt. The trail becomes steeper, leading you through alpine desert landscapes.

Altitude: From 4,673m to 5,895m (summit), descend to 3,100m.
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours ascent, 5-7 hours descent.

Embark on the summit attempt around midnight. The strenuous climb to Uhuru Peak is the most challenging part, followed by a descent to Mweka Camp for rest.

Altitude: From 3,100m to 1,640m.
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours.

Descend through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. This final day is a time for reflection on the incredible journey and accomplishment.
