The Wilderness Trail to Kilimanjaro's Summit

The Rongai Route, unique in its approach from the north, offers a distinct experience on Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s an excellent option for those seeking a quieter, more remote journey to the summit.

Day to day

Itinerary

Altitude: From 1,995m to 2,625m.
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours.

Begin at Nalemoru Gate, trekking through farmland and pine forest to reach Simba Camp. The trail offers a gentle start, with chances to see wildlife.

Altitude: From 2,625m to 3,600m.
Hiking Time: 6-7 hours.

Ascend through moorland, enjoying views of the Kenyan plains as you make your way to Kikelewa Camp. The day offers a peaceful hike with gradual elevation gain.

Altitude: From 3,600m to 4,330m.
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours.

Trek to Mawenzi Tarn, set in a dramatic location beneath the spires of Mawenzi. This shorter day aids acclimatization and allows time to explore the surroundings.

Altitude: From 4,330m to 4,700m.
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours.

Cross the lunar-like saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, heading to Kibo Hut. The landscape is sparse and otherworldly, with the summit in clear view.

Altitude: From 4,700m to 5,895m (summit), descend to 3,720m.
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours ascent, 4-6 hours descent.

Begin the summit attempt around midnight. Ascend steep scree slopes to reach Gilman’s Point, then continue to Uhuru Peak. After savoring the summit, descend to Horombo Hut.

Altitude: From 3,720m to 1,860m.
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours.

The final descent through moorland and forest to Marangu Gate. This is a day of reflection and celebration as you complete your journey.

Location: Horombo Hut or Mawenzi Tarn.
Activities: Short hikes and rest.

An optional extra day for better acclimatization. This can be spent resting or exploring the area, increasing the chances of a successful summit.

Altitude: From 3,100m to 1,640m.
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours.

The final descent through lush forests to Mweka Gate. Celebrate your achievement and receive your summit certificates before departure.
