This longer approach to Mount Kilimanjaro allows for better acclimatization and offers some of the most stunning scenery on the mountain. It’s an excellent choice for those who have a bit more time and want to savor the journey to Africa’s highest peak.

Itinerary

Altitude: From 2,360m to 2,820m.
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours.

Start from Londorossi Gate, trekking through lush rainforest to Mti Mkubwa Camp. This gentle start introduces you to the mountain’s diverse flora and fauna.

Altitude: From 2,820m to 3,500m.
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours.

Ascend to Shira 1 Camp, crossing the lower heath zone where the forest thins out. Enjoy the expansive views of the Shira Plateau as you acclimatize.

Altitude: From 3,500m to 3,840m.
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours.

A relatively easy hike across the Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp. This day offers great acclimatization and stunning views of the mountain.

Altitude: From 3,840m to 4,630m (Lava Tower), then down to 3,950m.
Hiking Time: 6-7 hours.

Trek to Lava Tower for acclimatization, then descend to the beautiful Barranco Camp. The descent aids acclimatization while providing stunning vistas.

Altitude: From 3,950m to 3,995m.
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours.

Conquer the Barranco Wall for an exhilarating start, then head to Karanga Camp. The day combines climbing, trekking, and scenic views.

Altitude: From 3,995m to 4,673m.
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours.

Ascend to Barafu Camp, the staging point for the summit attempt. Prepare for the challenging climb ahead, resting early for the midnight start.

Altitude: From 4,673m to 5,895m (summit), descend to 3,100m.
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours ascent, 5-7 hours descent.

Summit attempt begins at midnight. The challenging climb to Uhuru Peak is rewarded with spectacular sunrise views. Afterward, descend to Mweka Camp for rest.

Altitude: From 3,100m to 1,640m.
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours.

The final descent through lush forests to Mweka Gate. Celebrate your achievement and receive your summit certificates before departure.
